Can’t wait to share some fun projects I’ve been working on as well as some more Freelance Journey posts. The first topic I’d like to chat about is how to tailor your portfolio to get the clients you REALLY want.

I tend to get asked this question often by new graduates, first time freelancers, or those looking to overhaul their existing portfolio. For me, I’ve been learning along the way and have JUST NOW really understood what my brand means to me. That’s the challenge right? Obtaining work that really identifies with your overall brand story. Below are a few steps I took to better understand what Veda House stood for as well as how I’ve slowly morphed my portfolio into something I’m proud of. Warning…this is another long-winded post.

Figuring out what you want your brand to represent can be a really daunting paralyzing task. For me, figuring out what I liked mean’t sifting through a lot of what I didn’t. For years I’ve been using Pinterest to catalogue all the things that visually inspire me. I’ve found this resource to be a good way to “look back” and see how things are evolving over time. Find trends in the things you are pinning. You can also keep a running list of buzz words that relate to the type of content you pin. For Veda House, these buzz words are clean, simple & natural, touch of class, sophisticated materials, inspiring spaces…

Saving time with Streamlined Blogging https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/saving-time-with-streamlined-blogging/ https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/saving-time-with-streamlined-blogging/#respond Sun, 06 Jan 2019 01:26:32 +0000 https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/saving-time-with-streamlined-blogging/ Feeling the pressure to constantly produce valuable, one-of-a kind content for your blog? I know I am. It’s pretty darn time consuming and when your job title isn’t solely “blogger”, the pressure to keep up can sometimes be debilitating. For me, I use blogging as a way to connect with other creatives and to gain exposure to new clients interested in the work I’m sharing. Blogging is a vital piece of my business.

I’ve discovered a few ways to streamline sharing content no social media. These days, blogging means more than pushing publish in your blogging platform. If you’re doing it “right” (read: thoroughly) it means, sharing that finished post of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc, etc….and do so in a way that isn’t just spamming the same content on all platforms. Whew!! A few tips below.

There are definitely times when logging into WordPress is the very last thing on my mind. When days go by and you’re too busy to post…you’re just too busy. First and foremost, blogging needs to be fun and you need to be able to express your unique vision without feeling like it’s a life/death situation. Blog readers will always come back, clients will find you and your life will NOT be over. hehe.

Don’t be Afraid of Torrential Downpours https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/dont-be-afraid-of-torrential-downpours/ https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/dont-be-afraid-of-torrential-downpours/#respond Sat, 05 Jan 2019 01:26:10 +0000 https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/dont-be-afraid-of-torrential-downpours/ This past fall, I had the opportunity to contribute on article to the Fear Confessions series over at Organized Creatives (thanks Krystal for having me). My confessed fear was being afraid of torrential downpours of the creative kind. Even since that featured was published back in October, I’ve experienced both the good and bad kind of downpours, so I thought I’d share that essay here on Veda House with a few amendments.

If you know me on a more personal level, you’ll know that I frequently talk about missing my calling to be a professional (paid) storm chaser. I’ve always loved watching thunderstorms roll in and secretly hope I get to experience the beauty of a mid-western tornado…only if no one is hurt in the process. Knowing this, it might be peculiar to read that I’m afraid of torrential downpours. How silly is that!

I should clarify a few things. When I’m talking about downpours, I’m referencing the phrase “when it rains, it pours.” I should also note that we aren’t talking about a delightful rain shower here, we’re talking about the “when it rains, it pours in a bad flood kind of way that destroys everything you’ve been building…” kind of sprinkle.

How To Scale To A Million-Dollar Business https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/how-to-scale-to-a-million-dollar-business/ https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/how-to-scale-to-a-million-dollar-business/#respond Fri, 04 Jan 2019 01:25:47 +0000 https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/how-to-scale-to-a-million-dollar-business/ Thousands of new and established companies are competing hard in any given market. So, while it is easy to start a venture including a graphic design business, to take it to the next level and then to turn it into a million-dollar business, you must come up with a precise strategy. You should take every step carefully for the steady growth of your brand.

Are you the proud owner of a graphic design business, which is doing just fine? But you still may be facing some serious challenges when it comes to giving a big steady boost to your business. Many businesses fail to grow beyond a certain limit. Starting a small venture to serve clients with a design solution is not a hard task. But after some time, you are stuck with your low paying clients. As a result, your business does not grow as much as you had expected.

At this stage, most designers fail to get high paying clients. Such clients are the key to scale to a million-dollar business. If you go on applying the same old strategies, it is not going to yield the desired results. When you first started your design business or any other venture, your first and foremost concern was to make sure that clients can identify you, in your case, as a potential designer. Then, once you had some clientele, the next stage was to establish yourself as a brand in the design market.

Collection: 25 Of The Funniest Design Jokes https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/collection-25-of-the-funniest-design-jokes/ https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/collection-25-of-the-funniest-design-jokes/#respond Wed, 02 Jan 2019 01:25:05 +0000 https://barbienuki.com/portfolio/collection-25-of-the-funniest-design-jokes/ Isn’t laughter the best darn medicine? People say that each day without laughter is a wasted day! And we think they’re right. We’ve been counting on it when we came up with these funniest design jokes to make your day. There’s so much worry and misery spread all over the world, while life is so short and time passes so fast. This is why it is often said that life is way too short to spend it just worry and loathing.

Even for designers! That’s right. Designers should laugh more often too and this is exactly what we’ve planned for you ahead in this article that we’ve managed to fill with these funniest design jokes that only a designer can relate to.

Every time you stretch a font, you basically destroy its dimensions and the text ends up looking ugly. This creates a sense of disorganization in the whole image and disturbs the eye of readers. This is generally a huge relatable nightmare for a professional graphic designer and hence considered as one of the funniest design jokes among designers.

Story Telling Through Hand Lettering And Illustration

About the project

About the project

Storytelling is comparatively a new tactic that marketers choose to take up to engage and connect with their target audience. Almost all of the means used for brand promotion tell a brand story to convey some message to the target customers. Hand lettering and illustration is not an exception either. But you must consider some crucial aspects of letters and illustrations to convey a story.

Lettering is the art of letter drawing in such a way that it becomes an artwork. With each letter drawn originally, the entire composition becomes unique. It is a spontaneous artwork that you should carefully develop. For this quality, hand lettering is now being widely used in branding. You can create a unique and recognizable brand identity using hand lettering as you can involve small details of every letter and line.

Similarly, the illustration is also a powerful tool to convey a brand message and build brand steadily. You can create a mood of hope, irony, and humor, etc. with illustrations to clarify a brand’s promise. Companies like Etsy, Slack, MailChimp, Casper, and Headspace use illustrations to tell their stories.

Biggest challenges.

The biggest challenge I had when I was starting, I did not have the level of skills. While other artists had very high skills, mine were nothing as compared to them. So I think that such a significant gap in skills can be the biggest challenge. You should also know where your career needs to head in the future. I would advise you to set small and achievable goals at a time. If you set high goals in your early days, you may get discouraged if they are challenging to accomplish. Also, break the small goals further in small doable chunks.

New storytelling.

Well, it’s not possible to be consistently creative. I do think that if you’re stuck, just take a short break. Creativity does come from doing artwork and creating, but many a time, it comes from doing something else. For example, I’ll be watching a movie or reading a book, and then some ideas may strike. So, you should not be stressed out by the thought that you are hit.
